Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and LTE products in Japan need technical conformity certification under the Radio Law (MIC), shown by the Giteki mark. Devices that connect to public networks may also need JATE terminal approval. PCN handles testing and certification with registered bodies.
| Law | Radio Law (MIC); Telecommunications Business Act |
|---|---|
| Certification | Registered Certification Body |
| Mark | Giteki mark and number (or e-label) |
| Also | PSE for mains-powered parts |
Any product that intentionally transmits radio waves needs certification under Japan’s Radio Law before it is sold or used in Japan. That includes Bluetooth and Wi-Fi devices, LTE/5G modules, smart-home and IoT products, wearables, RFID readers, drones and wireless chargers. Compliance is shown by the Giteki mark and a certification number, printed on the product or shown as an electronic label. Japanese distributors and online marketplaces routinely ask sellers for this number before listing a product.
Indian manufacturers usually need more than one approval for Japan: MIC certification for the radio part, terminal-equipment approval (often called JATE) if the device connects directly to a public telecom network, and PSE marking under the Electrical Appliance and Material Safety Act if the product, its adapter or its battery falls within that law.
| Radio Law (MIC) | Radio equipment such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, LTE and RFID. Certified by a Registered Certification Body; Giteki mark and number on the product. |
|---|---|
| Telecommunications Business Act | Terminal equipment that connects to public telecom networks. Technical-conditions approval from a registered body. |
| Electrical Appliance & Material Safety Act (PSE) | Diamond PSE for specified products such as AC adapters (third-party conformity assessment). Circle PSE for non-specified products such as lithium-ion batteries. |
| Certification routes | Construction-type certification for mass-produced models, or certification of individual units. |
Once samples are ready, testing and certification typically take 4–8 weeks. Using a radio module that is already Giteki-certified, within its certified conditions, can shorten the process considerably. MIC certification for an unchanged design does not expire, but any change to the RF circuit, antenna or radio-related firmware needs to be reviewed and may require re-certification.
Cost depends mainly on the number of radio technologies (for example Wi-Fi plus Bluetooth plus LTE), whether existing test data can be reused, and whether PSE or terminal approval is needed alongside MIC.
