What is ISED / CSA?

Canada regulates radio equipment through Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED): transmitters need ISED certification (an IC number) to the RSS standards, and digital devices must meet ICES-003. Mains-powered electrical products must be certified by a Standards Council of Canada-accredited body – such as CSA, UL (cUL) or Intertek (cETL) – before they can be sold or connected in Canada.

Products covered

  • Smartphones
  • Wi-Fi routers
  • Bluetooth speakers
  • IoT modules
  • Power adapters
  • Household appliances
  • LED lighting

Examples only – coverage is set by the regulator’s current product list and HS codes. We confirm it for your product free of charge.

ISED / CSA process step by step

  1. Identify the RSS / ICES standards and the Canadian electrical-safety standard (CSA C22.2) for the product.
  2. Appoint a Canadian representative for ISED radio certification.
  3. Test radio and EMC to RSS/ICES and electrical safety to CSA standards.
  4. Certify through an ISED-recognised certification body and obtain the IC number; certify safety with CSA, cUL or cETL.
  5. Label with the IC number and safety mark, and keep bilingual (English/French) documentation.

Documents required

  • RF and EMC test reports to RSS / ICES-003
  • Safety test report to CSA C22.2 (often built on IEC/UL reports)
  • Block diagram, schematics and photos
  • Bilingual user manual and labels
  • Canadian representative letter
