UL / ETL Certification: US Electrical Safety for Products Made in India

Ask any US distributor what they need before listing an electrical product, and the answer is almost always a UL or ETL mark. These marks come from Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories (NRTLs) approved by OSHA. They confirm your product meets US safety standards, and your Indian factory is then inspected regularly to keep the listing. PCN guides you from standard selection to your first follow-up inspection.

How the NRTL System Works

Who certifiesOSHA-recognised NRTLs such as UL Solutions, Intertek (ETL), CSA Group and TÜV. Their US marks are all accepted.
StandardsMostly UL / ANSI safety standards, often harmonised with IEC standards but with US national differences
Is it mandatory?Required for many workplace products and expected under the National Electrical Code; in practice demanded by retailers, Amazon and insurers
OngoingFactory follow-up inspections (usually quarterly) and annual listing fees

Common Products & UL Standards

Why Components Make or Break a UL Project

Most first-time failures for Indian manufacturers come down to critical components: plugs, cords, fuses, switches, PCB laminates and plastic enclosures without US recognition. PCN reviews your bill of materials before samples go to the lab, so you only test once.

How PCN Handles It

  1. Scope. UL standard(s) identified and NRTL options compared on cost and lead time
  2. BOM review. Critical components checked for UL/CSA recognition; substitutes suggested
  3. Testing. Samples tested; your CB/IEC reports used to reduce scope where accepted
  4. Factory inspection. Initial production inspection at your Indian plant, prepared by PCN
  5. Listing. Listing published; mark artwork approved and follow-up service set up

UL / ETL Certification FAQs

UL or ETL: which should I choose?

Both are NRTL marks and show the same compliance. The choice usually depends on cost, lead time and your buyer’s preference.

Can my BIS or CB report replace UL testing?

It can reduce testing, but US national differences, US-recognised components and the factory inspection are still needed.

Will someone inspect my factory in India?

Yes. There is an initial production inspection, then unannounced follow-up inspections by the NRTL’s local inspectors.

How long does UL/ETL certification take?

Usually 6–16 weeks, depending on product complexity, component readiness and lab schedules.

Requirements, portals and fees change often. PCN confirms the applicable rules for each product before quoting. Certificates are issued by the relevant authority, accredited certification body or notified body.
