UK Electrical Safety: 2016 Regulations & BS 1363 Plugs

Your CE LVD reports usually work in Great Britain under the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016. The step many exporters miss is the Plugs and Sockets etc. (Safety) Regulations 1994: domestic products generally need a BS 1363 plug with a BS 1362 fuse. PCN checks plugs, EMC, energy and PSTI together.

Scope of the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016

The Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 apply to electrical equipment placed on the Great Britain market that is designed for use between 50 and 1,000 V AC or 75 and 1,500 V DC. This covers most mains-powered household appliances, lighting, power tools, IT power supplies and similar products. Equipment must meet the regulations’ safety objectives. The usual route is the designated standards, such as BS EN 60335 for household appliances or BS EN 62368-1 for audio/video and IT equipment.

Manufacturer and Importer Obligations

For an Indian manufacturer, the UK importer is legally responsible for checking that you have done all of the above. Having complete documentation in place makes it much easier to win UK distributors.

How PCN Supports Your UK Launch

We identify the applicable designated standards and arrange testing at accredited labs. Then we compile the technical file and draft your Declaration of Conformity. Your product will often also need UK REACH and RoHS checks. Selling chargers? See charger and adapter certification for the UK. Shipping to Europe too? Combine this with CE marking.
