Japan’s Electrical Appliances and Materials Safety Act (DENAN) splits regulated electrical products into two groups. Specified electrical appliances and materials carry the diamond PSE mark. They are higher-risk items such as AC adapters, power cords, plugs and sockets, and some heaters. Before sale they need a conformity assessment certificate from a registered conformity assessment body. Non-specified products carry the circle PSE mark. Examples include many kitchen appliances, LED lamps, power banks and audio-visual equipment. For these, the business confirms conformity itself using its own or third-party test reports.
Both routes require the Japanese importer or manufacturer to notify METI within 30 days of starting the business.
