RED Certification for Wireless & IoT Products

Wi-Fi routers, Bluetooth earbuds, smart plugs, GPS trackers, RFID readers: anything that sends or receives radio waves falls under the EU Radio Equipment Directive 2014/53/EU (RED). It combines safety, EMC and spectrum rules in one law. Since 1 August 2025, connected devices must also meet cybersecurity requirements. PCN plans your radio, EMC, safety and cyber testing as one programme.

Already Have WPC or FCC Approval?

Good news: much of the design data and some test setups carry over. EU limits and ETSI methods still need their own testing, but PCN plans it around what you already have, whether that’s WPC-ETA, TEC or FCC data, so you avoid paying twice.

How PCN Handles It

  1. Scope. Radio technologies, bands and applicable EN standards; check whether cybersecurity applies
  2. Test plan. Radio, EMC, safety, RF exposure and cyber testing combined
  3. Cyber review. Passwords, updates, data protection and network features checked against EN 18031
  4. Notified Body. EU-type examination when needed
  5. DoC & CE. Technical file, EU DoC, band and power info in the manual, and CE mark

RED Certification FAQs

Does a certified radio module remove the need for RED testing?

No, although it helps. The finished product still needs assessment for EMC, safety, RF exposure and, where applicable, cybersecurity.

Which products need RED cybersecurity compliance?

Internet-connected radio equipment, toys with radio, and wearables that process personal data, among others, from 1 August 2025.

Is receive-only equipment covered?

Yes. GNSS receivers and broadcast receivers fall under RED.

How long does RED take?

Typically 3–6 weeks for self-declared products, longer when a Notified Body is involved.

Requirements, portals and fees change often. PCN confirms the applicable rules for each product before quoting. Certificates are issued by the relevant authority, accredited certification body or notified body.
