What is SLSI?

The Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI) runs a mandatory Import Inspection Scheme covering about 120 or more designated products, from food, oils and beverages to cement, steel, PVC pipes, tiles, tyres, helmets, cables, switches, LED lamps, circuit breakers and battery cells. Each consignment is checked against the relevant Sri Lanka Standard; certificates from accredited laboratories or recognised standards bodies in the exporting country are accepted, and uncertified goods are sampled and tested.

SLSI process step by step

  1. Check whether the HS code of your product is on SLSI's list of designated items and identify the Sri Lanka Standard.
  2. Test the product in an accredited laboratory to the Sri Lanka Standard (or an equivalent the SLSI accepts).
  3. The Sri Lankan importer registers with SLSI and submits the import documents and test certificates for each consignment.
  4. SLSI reviews documents and may sample and test goods at the port.
  5. Goods are released on SLSI clearance; keep test certificates current for future shipments.

Documents required

  • Commercial invoice, packing list and bill of lading
  • Test certificate from an accredited lab against the Sri Lanka Standard
