Power Adapter & Charger Certification in the UK: Requirements, Process and Timelines
Power adapters and mobile chargers are mains-connected products, so electrical safety, EMC and (in several markets) energy-efficiency rules all apply. Great Britain has its own UKCA regime but continues to recognise CE marking for most products, while the PSTI Act adds mandatory security rules for connected consumer devices.
To import and sell power adapters and chargers in the UK you will typically need:
UK Electrical Safety – Mains-powered adapters fall under the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations, and plug-in types must meet UK plug rules.
UKCA – The product needs a UK Declaration of Conformity and the UKCA mark, or CE where the UK continues to recognise it.

Step-by-step: how to certify a power adapter for the UK
Confirm scope for your model. Share the datasheet, materials, any radio, battery or power-supply details and the HS code so we can confirm exactly which of the schemes above apply – in the UK you decide between UKCA and CE, then check whether the PSTI security regime applies to connected products.
Set up the local party. Make sure a UK importer or UK-based economic operator is identified on the product, packaging or accompanying documents.
Assess under the UK Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations. Electrical safety to designated standards, plus the separate UK plug-and-socket rules where a UK plug is fitted.
Sign the UK Declaration of Conformity and mark the product. Use the UKCA mark (or CE, where the UK continues to recognise it) with the UK importer's details.
Keep it valid. Keep the UK Declaration of Conformity and technical documentation for 10 years, publish and honour the PSTI security-update period where it applies, and watch for changes in the UK's CE-recognition policy.
Testing and documentation
Testing your power adapter will need
Electrical safety to IEC 62368-1 (India: IS 13252 Part 1)
EMC emissions and immunity (CISPR 32 / CISPR 35 or local equivalent)
No-load power and average efficiency (e.g. DOE Level VI in the USA, Ecodesign Regulation (EU) 2019/1782 in the EU)
Plug and pin dimensions for the target country's socket system
Exact standards and editions depend on the model and the scheme; we confirm the test plan before any sample is shipped.
Documents to prepare
Product datasheet and rating label
Schematics, transformer specification and PCB layout
Critical components list (transformer, Y-capacitors, fuse, opto-coupler) with component certificates
User manual and safety instructions
Label and packaging artwork
UK Declaration of Conformity (or EU DoC where CE is used)
PSTI statement of compliance for connectable products
FAQs: power adapter certification in the UK
Is UK Electrical Safety mandatory for power adapters and chargers in the UK?
Yes. Mains-powered adapters fall under the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations, and plug-in types must meet UK plug rules. GB equivalent of the EU LVD for 50–1000 V AC equipment. Plugs and sockets have separate UK plug-and-socket safety rules.
What certifications do power adapters and chargers need in the UK?
The core requirements are UK Electrical Safety, UKCA. The table above explains why each one applies.
Does a foreign manufacturer need a local representative in the UK?
The UK importer's name and address must appear on the product, packaging or documents. A non-UK manufacturer can also appoint a UK authorised representative to hold the technical documentation. By scheme – UK Electrical Safety: Depends; UKCA: Depends – UK importer details must appear on the product.
How long does power adapter certification take in the UK?
Typical timelines by scheme: UK Electrical Safety: 3–6 weeks; UKCA: 3–8 weeks. Schemes can run in parallel once samples and documents are ready. Send us your model details for a realistic plan.
Can I reuse existing test reports for the UK?
Yes. Test reports to the EN standards used for CE marking are normally accepted for UKCA too, and CE-marked products can in most cases be placed on the GB market as they are. PSTI needs its own statement of compliance.
